ABOUT US: OUR HISTORY AND OUR WORK TODAY
CUEX was founded in 1904 and is the oldest expeditions society of its kind. Our alumni include Sir Peter Scott, Sir Vivian Fuchs and Sir David Attenborough. The early years of CUEX were prolific in terms of numbers of expeditions launched, and to an extent expeditioning was still a part of the golden era of exploration. However, as the years progressed, the University became more aware of the number and scope of expeditions being launched and decided to introduce an element of assessment for expeditions wanting to refer to themselves as a 'Cambridge' expedition, in order to uphold the good name of the University!
This process of approval by the senior Expeditions Committee, which is still in place today, gave CUEX an extra role as a student advisory body for expeditions aiming to gain this approval. This shaped the purpose of the society as we know it today.
Today, we exist to support students, staff and alumni who want to organise their own independent, adventurous and unique expeditions. We arrange weekly talks by interesting and eminent expeditioners, expeditions advice forums, skills sessions and relaxed social events for CUEX members to meet other like-minded members of the university.
CUEX are delighted and grateful to be in partnership with RacingThePlanet, the renowned ultramarathon and adventure equipment supplier.
RacingThePlanet were founded in 2002 to organise ultramarathons and other adventurous endurance challenges, most notably the 4 Deserts. The first race under its banner was the Gobi March held in 2003 near Dunhuang, China, followed shortly by the Atacama Crossing (Chile, 2004), the Sahara Race (Egypt, 2005) and The Last Desert (Antarctica, 2006). Since 2006, these four deserts have been raced in series; in each desert competitors race 250 km over 7 days, carrying their food and belongings with them. In 2009 and 2010, TIME Magazine ranked the 4 Deserts series as among the top ten endurance events in the world.
As a supplier, RacingThePlanet is known for its charitable initiatives and high quality advice, specifically tailored to the trail running and adventure community, providing the very best outdoor equipment, clothing and nutritional products.
